OSCAR-40, easily the most ambitious amateur satellite
ever conceived, was just launched on the evening of November
15th this year. I became an Amateur Radio Operator almost nine
years ago, right as the OSCAR-40 project - then called Phase 3D - was
in its initial planning stages. This particular satellite took nearly
ten years of design work, construction, testing, and diplomacy to find
a launching opportunity. Amateur satellite construction has come a long
way from OSCAR-1 back in 1961.
