Viewpoint: Clean Soil for Widewaters Development

The Ithaca Journal (Dec 6, 2000) reports a complaint about the Planning and Development Board's approval of the Widewaters project, registerd by Dan Hoffman.     • A Space Satellite for the Common Man

    OSCAR-40, easily the most ambitious amateur satellite ever conceived, was just launched on the evening of November 15th this year. I became an Amateur Radio Operator almost nine years ago, right as the OSCAR-40 project - then called Phase 3D - was in its initial planning stages. This particular satellite took nearly ten years of design work, construction, testing, and diplomacy to find a launching opportunity. Amateur satellite construction has come a long way from OSCAR-1 back in 1961.

    • Farewell to Julien Fleming

    A little boy I never met died last week. Julien Fleming's struggle with the disease GM1 gangliosidosis ended peacefully early on the afternoon of November 29th, when he passed away at the age of six.

    I would never even have heard of Julien if it hadn't been for a group of members of STARFLEET: The International Star Trek Fan Association who happened to live nearby; a small group of friends from the area's chapters had pooled their creative talents to create a fundraising mechanism dedicated to helping the boy's family meet its expenses.
