The last week has been very difficult for everyone, of course. For friends and families of the victims of this horrible tragedy, it has been the worst. I dare say, however, that second on the list for whom this week has been difficult has been those who love and defend the very bedrock of this country: our freedom and civil liberties.

riday 14 September has been declared a national day of remembrance.> At Cornell University, President Hunter Rawlings led a campus-wide convocation on the Arts Quad that included a reading of an Archie Ammons poem by Cornell student Jessica Heley, a prayer led by Kenneth Clarke, director of Cornell United Religious Work, and songs led by Samite of Uganda, now a local resident and a frequent and inspiring performer.

This time two years ago, we were packing up our cares and woes and way to much too much other stuff. My husband and I were saying goodbye to Ithaca and were off to the Wild West Coast, looking for adventure and seeking our fortunes. Our destiny came in the shape of Santa Cruz, California, which is located at the top of Monterey Bay.
