The Canadian-Celtic band "Tanglefoot" was named the Best of Bound for Glory for the 2000-2001 season, which ended this summer.

At the October 14, 2001 edition of WVBR's Bound for Glory, host and founder Phil Shapiro announced that the Ontario-based folk quintet Tanglefoot has won the Third Annual Best of Bound for Glory Award. The award recognizes the fans' favorite from the recently concluded 34th season of Bound for Glory, a Sunday night staple on WVBR-FM, and North America's longest running live folk concert broadcast. The winner was chosen by members of the Friends of Bound for Glory, a non-profit organization set up by fans in 1996 to raise money for and awareness of the program. This year's recipient of the Best of Bound for Glory Award joins past honorees Mustard's Retreat and Small Potatoes.

Tanglefoot has had a vibrant and entertaining edge since its start in the early 1980s. They have a big, full-throttle sound that draws on Celtic, French-Canadian, and Ottawa Valley traditions. The band, consisting of fiddler and songwriter Joe Grant, guitarist Steve Ritchie, bassist Al Parrish, piano player Rob Ritchie, and mandolin/guitar player Terry Young, made their most recent Bound for Glory appearance on the October 22, 2000 show. They have released ten albums, including their most recent, 1999's "Full Throated Abandon" on Borealis Records.

Al Parrish, who is also a songwriter and vocalist with the band, was completely surprised by Tanglefoot's award. He responded to the news by declaring, "I'm thrilled about this. And I feel we're in really great company."

Host Phil Shapiro commented, "None of the winners of the Best of Bound for Glory awards have been among the most famous people to appear on the show. But every one of the winners has been among my personal favorites. The members of the Friends of Bound for Glory have super taste."

WVBR's Bound for Glory, now celebrating its 35th year, broadcasts live from the Café at Anabel Taylor Hall at Cornell University on Sunday nights from 8 to 11. Performers play live sets at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 PM. During Cornell breaks, Phil Shapiro plays traditional and modern folk albums from WVBR's studios. Bound for Glory may be heard on WVBR-FM, 93.5 and 105.5, and also live over the internet at http://www.wvbr.com.

Host Phil Shapiro brought Bound for Glory with him when he moved to Ithaca in September 1967, putting folk and acoustic musicians on the air almost immediately. The show has had the same format since 1969, featuring a folk concert with a live audience on 33 Sundays every year, for a total of well over 1000 live concert broadcasts. These concerts have featured some of the most renowned voices in American, Canadian, and European Folk Music.

Bound for Glory's 35th season continues on October 21 with Michael McNevin. Upcoming shows include Joe LaMay and Sherri Reese with Genesee Rose on October 28, Bill Morrissey on November 4, Pat Humphries on November 11, and Mike Seeger on November 18. Rounding out the Fall will be the Diamondback Rattlers on December 2 and Michael Jerling on December 9.
