Cover Story: 21st Century Manifest Destiny

by Richard C.S. Kinne

In October of last year I found myself watching the Australian film, The Dish. The Dish revolves around the loosely truthful story of how the Parkes Radio Telescope in Australia helped transmit Neil Armstrong's first steps on the Moon. As I watched this dramatization of what was then one of the most broadcast events in the history of the world, I was struck by its power.

  • Super Sunday with the Danes

    by Joshua Novikoff

Monday. 12:30 in the morning. February. Time for the Super Bowl. Playing the Super Bowl in February was weird enough for most Americans. Yet I had it even weirder this year, watching the big game in Denmark, halfway around the world from New Orleans.

  • 35 Years of Bound for Glory

    by Alan Rose

Phil Shapiro is an icon on the local music scene. His Sunday night show on Ithaca's WVBR FM, Bound for Glory, has brought luminaries and lesser-knowns from the folk music world to Ithaca and shared their concerts with the masses via live radio broadcasts. As the 35th season was gearing up, I had the opportunity to interview Phil and get his thoughts on the past, and the future, of this Ithaca tradition.

  • New Routine in New York

    by Shell Lewis

Michael Lewis has followed the same routine for the past two months. He has awakened every weekday morning at 7:30 a.m. and helped his wife, Chandra Lewis, prepare breakfast for their three children, Mike Lewis, Diamond Lewis, and Marcus Lewis. Just a few months ago, Lewis would have been at work as his wife took their kids to school, and he would have been asleep, resting up for work the next day, when his daughter blessed dinner. Since he is one of 700 Pitney Bowes employees from the World Trade Center area who were forced to relocate after the Sept. 11 attacks, it is likely that his new daily routine will continue.

    by Bryan VanCampen

Kevin Heffernan is one-fifth of the comedy team Broken Lizard, whose new comedy Super Troopers opens nationwide from Fox Searchlight Pictures on September 15. I was able to meet with the fellows before Cornell Cinema screened Super Troopers, but there was no time for a follow-up interview, just a signed Super Troopers poster. The boys were on to the next stop on their tour.

  • The Plumbing of MP3

    by J. Alec West

I have a rather unique/moderate opinion on the subject of MP3 file-sharing. I don't consider it theft. I consider it revenge. Everyone knows that the music-CD cartel has been ripping off the consumer for years. The music-CD industry knows all too well that their victories over MP3.com, Scour, and Napster are hollow victories at best. According to Wired Magazine, file-sharing activity has not gone down since the demise of Napster.
