Cover Story: On local currency

While visiting friends in Minnesota a few years back, I was introduced to notaphily, a branch of numismatics that deals with paper money, not coins. The interest went as far as me buying an odd job lot, examining and storing it. Then things faded for a bit. But the interest in currency and bills remained. Ithaca has a lot of neat local things attached to it; one is a local currency, Ithaca HOURS.

  • Big Music doesn't deserve your money

    There's been a lot of media buzz lately about the effect file sharing has had on the recording industry. Reporters local and national seem to look only to the RIAA's web site when writing about the most recent store closing or falling sales figure. The RIAA talking points are that file sharing is responsible for recent sales losses, and that a file shared is a sale lost. This logic has resulted in lawsuits ranging upwards of $300 million against individual users. With yearly CD sales in the $14 billion range, this somewhat outlandishly suggests that one user was responsible for a 2.1% drop in industry revenue!

  • World-class squash stars coming to Ithaca

    Two of the best squash players on the planet will be in Ithaca this winter, at the third annual World Pro Squash Exhibition. John White, currently the second-ranked squash player in the world, is renowned for his bold attacking style. Graham Ryding, currently ranked number 14 in the world, is one of the most dynamic and athletic players on the world tour. On March 6th, at 7:00 pm, White and Ryding will play an exhibition game for an audience that will include reserved seating and general admission seating and standing room. Gold Patron and Sponsor package buyers will also be able to attend a clinic, limited to five players with John and five with Graham, on court with the stars.

    When New York Democrats go to the polls to cast their votes for their party's presidential nominee, they will probably decide in March whether George Bush will win in November. The 2004 presidential election is arguably the most important political race in our nation since the end of World War II. Of all the possible candidates, I believe that Wesley Clark comes closest to the ideal Democratic standard-bearer. His weaknesses in the primary become strengths in the general election.

    Let's face it. While Ithaca winters are not the universally dreary, grey, sunless, snow-locked months of misery some would have us believe, they're also not tropical or snow-free. We live in an area that does get winter weather, but by keeping a few things in mind as we go about our daily routine, we can help keep ourselves and those around us safe.
