Tempers flare as Ithaca building department labels Pyramid Sound building unsafe

Weeks of negotiations, wrangling, and protests came to a head in mid June as City of Ithaca building commissioner Phyllis Radke posted the Pyramid Sound Recording Studios building on Clinton Street as unsafe, prohibiting further use. The move came despite Radke's assurances to owner Alex Perialas just days earlier that she would not close the building.

Why I'm a New Jersey Devils fan for a day

Why I'm a New Jersey Devils fan for a day

I've never much cared about New Jersey's sports franchises. I hardly ever root for the Giants or the Jets (except when they're playing the Dolphins; I always root against the Dolphins), certainly couldn't care less about the Nets, and don't pay much attention to the New Jersey Devils.

In the final days at Castaways, a look at the era of music on Ithaca's waterfront

In the final days at Castaways, a look at the era of music on Ithaca's waterfront

A few weeks shy of 41 years ago, the Salty Dog opened its doors on Taughannock Boulevard, on the Cayuga Lake Inlet. Calling it the "waterfront" then would've been too generous, but over the last several years of development, spots on the water have become increasingly attractive. It's on the waterfront that Castaways will close its doors at the end of April.

Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival under way at Ithaca College and Cinemapolis

Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival under way at Ithaca College and Cinemapolis

The 15th annual Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival is sparking conversation this weekend at Cinemapolis with its exploration of this year’s theme, microtopias, through film, discussion and new media.

A utopia is an ideal, a perfect society. We imagine this society without limits or constraints, but in reality, this type of perfection exists nowhere. Microtopias, though, exist everywhere.

History in the making as Big Red men's hockey heads west for NCAA regional round

History in the making as Big Red men's hockey heads west for NCAA regional round

The last time Cornell University and the University of Michigan met on the ice, fifteen years ago, they skated to a 3-3 tie. The last time they met in postseason play, 21 years ago, the Big Red stunned the home crowd in Ann Arbor by winning the first of a best-of-three NCAA regional series. This Friday night, the teams meet in an NCAA regional semifinal in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Royal Palm may close, but 70 years of memories remain

Royal Palm may close, but 70 years of memories remain

"I can't believe I found it," said Courtney Erickson on Wednesday afternoon at the Royal Palm Tavern in Collegetown. The Cornell University alumnus had driven from his hometown, Schenectady, on a mission -- to find his late mother's name, carved into one of the wooden tables at the popular bar in 1953.

Red territory: Checking out the New Hampshire primary

Driving on Route 93 North this Tuesday morning, I was faced with the open road ahead of me on the way from my small town of North Reading, Massachusetts, to the even smaller town of Bethlehem, New Hampshire.

Urban Horse Thieves ride one last time at the Nines

Urban Horse Thieves ride one last time at the Nines

This fall has been a time of endings on the local music scene. Bands ranging from twenty-year veterans Lost Sailors to the more recently arrived 505 Blues have called it quits in recent weeks. And, after a show at the Nines this Friday night, Urban Horse Thieves will join them in riding off into the sunset after a successful ten-year run.

Preparing for disaster: Are you ready for the next ice storm?

Preparing for disaster: Are you ready for the next ice storm?

Before you read any further, try an exercise. Find a piece of paper and something to write with. Go to your kitchen or pantry and write down a complete list of every single edible thing you have in the house. Everything! Animal crackers to zwieback. Include Uncle Charlie's infamous fruitcake from three years ago, the two cans of chicken broth in the back of the cabinet, and the freezer-burned pork chops in the bottom of the deep-freeze. (While you're at it, take this chance to throw away that fruitcake and the freezer-burned chops.)
