The Burger Boys go Veggie

The traditional fast food chains, derided as "the burger boys" by a recent slew of KFC ads, could fire back that it's hard to find the word "Fried" in any KFC marketing literature these days. Instead, the chains seem to be reinventing themseves for a more discerning clientele. One surprise is Burger King's new "BK Veggie" vegetarian burger.

An Evening -- no, a NIGHT -- with Kevin Smith

To document an evening with the man known to most casual film fans as "Silent Bob" is no easy task, and I wasn't sure I was up to it. I'm not, after all, nearly as rabid a fan as most of the three or four hundred students who were already camped out on the steps of Cornell's Bailey Hall at 6:50 on this chilly October evening. Don't get me wrong: I'm a huge fan. But I haven't memorized every scrap of dialogue from every film the man's made, which is what seemed to be the primary content of the conversations swirling amongst this crowd.

Scenes from the Night: Grassroots and Beyond

Nearly two weeks after the GrassRoots Festival, I am still recovering. This annual rite of summer, which actually occurs just outside of Ithaca in Trumansburg, NY, never fails to leave me both exhausted and exhilarated. With four stages of music running almost continuously from Thursday afternoon through Sunday night, it is a music-lover's paradise. The sense of community that forms over the long weekend is nothing short of amazing.

A Letter to Tops Friendly Markets

Dear Tops folks,

I learned recently that Tops Friendly Markets has bought the A&P Supermarket on Triphammer Road in Ithaca, with the specific intention to close the store in a few short weeks. I am writing to ask you to reconsider, and keep this popular, apparently profitable store open.

The A&P Supermarket at Ithaca's Triphammer Mall has been open since 1966, when the area, just south of Route 13, consisted mostly of well-spaced houses and farmland.

A Statement Made: Cornell 2001 Women's Lacrosse

When Jenny Graap arrived on the East Hill in 1997 to become Cornell's head women's lacrosse coach, she inherited a team that had gone 2-22 in Ivy League competition in the previous four seasons. One might think that the task before her was monumental. One might also think that it would have to be a long time before the Big Red would be in a position to make any waves on the national scene.

It's Not the Cell Phone

It's terrible that Niki Taylor was badly injured in a car accident involving a cell phone, bringing this issue to the forefront, and that so many others are injured by accidents caused by careless drivers, but we must recognize that it simply wasn't the cell phone that caused the accident.

Driven to Distraction

It's a fairly common scene. A man is seated talking to his wife, each drinking a cup of coffee. He's balancing a donut on his stomach and takes a call on the phone. The CD player is turned up and he's continually trying to quiet the kids and stop them from tossing the football around. It could be your average American living room on a Saturday night. Only the scene is not taking place in their home. He and his family are just two feet away from you -- driving 60 miles an hour with 3,000 pounds of steel under them. And, the last thing on his mind is his driving.

Summer in Ithaca brings outdoor activities as we set out to take advantage of the area's natural beauty. It also signals the festival season and as a corollary, the season of album releases by many of our local artists. With one area festival over and one just a short time away, now is the perfect time to take a glimpse at what has passed and what is yet to come.

"Uniit" is the self-titled debut album from Uniit Carruyo, singer and songwriter from the Sim Redmond Band.
